Scaling new heights to help animals in need

October saw local man, Steve Brennan take on the epic challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, raising over £1,500 to help Warrington Animal Welfare.

Dormant volcano, Mount Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, measures 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level and is one of the seven summits of the world.

Steve trained for the event with his dog, Joey, walking 60miles/100km a week to train in the months leading up to the trip.  Talking about the challenge, Steve said:

“I couldn't have done it without Joey, he is my constant companion and keeps me going.  I chose to help to raise money for Warrington Animal Welfare as animal welfare is such a worthwhile cause and is close to mine and lots of people’s hearts.  I also paid them a visit and saw what a great job they were doing, working at absolute capacity with very limited resources.

And as with lots of charities, they need help to keep going.”

Steve’s self-funded trip, saw him take on many different environments over eight days, from the bushland and rainforest to the heath, alpine desert and then onto the Arctic Zone.  It's like going from the equator to Antarctic in one climb, with temperatures dropping to -20 degrees C, plus, less than 50% oxygen at the top.  He successfully summitted without having to take any anti-altitude sickness drugs, which are very commonplace to cope with the lack of oxygen, and without any assistance.  This is quite an achievement given that Steve also suffers from Low kidney function caused by chronic kidney disease.

Torus Trustee, Julie Picket added:

“We were blown away with Steve’s amazing achievement, especially as only around 50% of people who attempt actually succeed.

We are extremely grateful and honoured that he chose to do this for our Charity.

We are truly grateful for any support, as like most charities, we are struggling at the moment due to the cost-of-living crisis in the wake of the pandemic, which has both seen a reduction in support whilst an increase in demand for our services.”
