At the end of May, Chico’s life changed forever. This sweet little terrier was found dumped outside our rescue centre — scared, in pain, and in desperate need of help. He was severely matted, struggling to toilet, and clearly very unwell. His suffering had gone on for far too long.
Chico was rushed to the vet, where he was diagnosed with bilateral perineal hernias — a painful and serious condition in which weakened pelvic muscles allow organs to slip out of place. In Chico’s case, it was severe:
- His intestines had prolapsed on one side
- His bladder and prostate had herniated on the other
Emergency surgery gave Chico a second chance — but complications meant he needed even more treatment, time, and patience to recover.
And recover he has!!!
Today, Chico is thriving in his foster home. He’s housetrained, full of character, and ready to find his forever home. Despite everything he’s been through, he’s gentle, affectionate, and has a typical terrier spark — funny, mischievous, and incredibly resilient.
Chico is clever, cheeky, and endlessly endearing. He will find any hidden treat in the house, and he loves nothing more than curling up on the sofa or nestling his head in your lap. Once he trusts you, he’s incredibly loving and loyal, but he needs a little time and space to get there.
He now doesn't mind being picked up and particularly enjoys a fuss. We are seeking a calm, adult-only home with terrier experience which we feel would suit him best. While he currently shares a home with another little dog, he can be a bit barky to other dogs on walks — likely a result of his past trauma.
Chico did have one moment early in his recovery where he snapped in fear during a harness incident, the only time this has happened, despite having undergone multiple surgeries and medical procedures. Since then, he’s shown no further issues and continues to blossom in his foster home.
Chico’s ideal home:
- Adult-only home
- Terrier-savvy owners preferred
- Could potentially live with another calm dog of similar size and age.
- No cats
- A home where someone is around most of the time
- A peaceful, steady environment where he can continue to feel safe
He’s a great little walker, adores human company, and just wants to be someone’s sidekick.
After all he’s been through, Chico truly deserves his happy ending. If you can offer him the patience, kindness, and love he needs, he’ll reward you with loyalty, laughter, and a whole lot of character.
Chico didn’t deserve the pain he suffered — but he absolutely deserves the world.
